How to Get More Mileage on Your Electric Scooter

by Keira Newman

Perhaps you already know, or perhaps you don’t know – yet.

Your electric scooter is power-driven by a pack of batteries that look similar to your regular double A’s but bigger, which tells us how far the technology has come. Sure, it’s not going to make motorized skateboards and other light personal mobility devices like power wheelchairs, e-bikes, motorized skateboards far better, but it’s a vital component that led to the ‘birth’ of the modern electric scooter. What will really determine whether other mobility devices can give is to expand your range of mobility. It simply means, how far will it get you or how far can you go?

Today, numerous modern electric scooters use lithium-ion batteries made by a few companies to power their e-scooters.

Premium, top-tier electric scooter models like Mearth use high-quality Li-on cells that are hot-swappable batteries. This is a simple feature that can greatly put ease on one’s trip just by changing the drained battery with a fully charged one. Trips are extended, so there’s no cause for panic because the possibility of getting stranded in the middle of nowhere without a working battery is now a thing of the past.

Remember how convenient it was to have an extra battery to use when your cellphone’s battery was completely drained when you were in the middle of an important call? You got saved – just in the nick of time.

Here is a bit of an inside information. Manufacturers measure the lifespan of your e-scooter’s batteries by cycles. By whaaat?

A cycle means a rotation. It refers to the number of complete charge/discharge cycles that’s able to support before a percentage of the original capacity drops.

For example, if you have a battery with 300-500 cycles, your battery capacity will fall under 80 percent. That means you’ll have to slow down or use your e-scooter on eco mode to conserve the battery power.

Uh-huh.

But wait, before you get disheartened, there’s a way to avoid such eventuality from happening before its due course.

Here are four important steps that can help extend the lifespan of your battery:

  1. Keep your e-scooter battery charged
  1. Make sure that your battery is always charged by at least 10 percent.
  2. Now, if you’re going to store your e-scooter for a long time, make sure that the battery is charged by at least 50 percent.
  3. Charge your battery — at least once in 30 days.
  4. You may want to make the most out of your battery capacity as much as possible, but if you let your battery to be completely depleted or drained before you charge it, you will just shorten its lifespan.
  1. Invest in a high-quality battery

Perhaps you’re familiar with the price-to-practicality ratio, or you may have heard of it. Well, it is important when you are deliberating the need to purchase something. The said ratio is a way of determining whether something is worth the money you’re going to pay for it, or not. On the subject of buying, this cannot be repeated often enough: electric scooter batteries are definitely worth investing in. When the cost is considered, and the practicality of its use is decided as essential and important, then the price-to-practicality ratio is high.

To be able to perform well and to enable the rider to go on unhampered trips at any given time, having an extra, a back up – hot swappable (and rechargeable) batteries are not mere fanciful caprice but a necessary expense to get the most out of, and maximize one’s riding pleasure.

When you do buy an extra battery, do not opt for a cheap, generic or inferior e-scooter battery. You will only regret it, and sooner at that. Be wise, buy an original battery and charger for replacement. You won’t ever regret your choice.

  1. Keep the battery safe and dry

Batteries can be affected by different kinds of temperature. To prolong its life, store your electric scooter in a cool, dry place. Even if the IP rating makes the electric scooter water-resistant, it’s not waterproof. While Li-on (Lithium Ion) batteries are powerful, they are a little sensitive. If they get overheated or damaged, they can be unusable or worse, catch fire. Do not overcharge overnight. It is unsafe and dangerous.

When it’s time to dispose of your battery that’s no longer working, do it properly. Your e-scooter battery is not an ordinary double-A or triple-A battery that you can just throw in a drawer or in the trash and then forget about it. Be mindful, be careful.

  1. Regular maintenance goes a long way

While electric scooters are not complicated like a car or motorcycle under the hood, they do need proper and regular maintenance. It is really common sense, yet these little things tend to be overlooked.

You can prolong the lifespan of your battery up to 2-3 years by following the above-mentioned four easy steps. For more information on how to maximize the lifespan of your e-scooter battery, log on to www.mearth.com.au
